We are often told that being a volunteer is a choice each of us must make, that the act of volunteering is optional, that you can get the same blessing by sending money after all ‘God loves a cheerful giver’, doesn’t He? Yes, God loves a cheerful giver and yes money is often the most useful donation of all but no, money is not the best gift.

What is most needed is you. The very act of reaching out to another human being in a caring and loving way shows them that they are worthy, that they are seen, and that they can hope for a better tomorrow. Take care of their basic need for food shelter and security and then speak of God’s love for them. The love of Christ from me to you and from you to the next person and so on.

Begin today, begin where you are. Look around with the eyes of Jesus and see the homeless, the poor and the outcast. They are there and God is waiting. He has chosen us to help them.

Ephesians 2:10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
